Mount Kilimanjaro is located in northeastern Tanzania, about one thirty minutes drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). It is a giant inactive stratovolcano with furmaroles that emit gas in the crater on the main summit named Kibo.
At 5,895m (19,340ft) Mount Kilimanjaro hosts the highest point in Africa i.e. Uhuru Peak. Uhuru (translation - Freedom) is only one of the seven summits trekkers can aim to reach. The first person to reach Uhuru summit is Johannes Kinyala Lauwo a Marangu army scout who led the first ascent by non-indigenous climbers, a German Hans Meyer and an Austrian Ludwig Purtscheller, in the year 1889.
There are several routes to climb up Kilimanjaro, and these include: Marangu, Rongai, Machame, Lemosho, Umbwe and Mweka. The latter is usually recommended for descending purposes rather than ascending.
